Officials have provided details about the accident in the Brahmaputra River in Barpeta. They said that after receiving information about the incident, the police, SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and civil administration launched a rescue operation with the help of local people. According to the information provided, the accident occurred when the boat was traveling from Rahampur to Borghul Char (a riverine island). In Assam, the term “char” refers to temporary sandy islands formed in rivers, especially the Brahmaputra, due to erosion and sedimentation.

An official stated, “While the boat was underway, it was allegedly caught in a whirlpool and sank. Most of the people were rescued by a nearby boat.” Chowdhury said that six people are still missing, four of whom are children. He added, “Local people told us that the boat was operating without any safety measures. None of the passengers were wearing life jackets.”

They said that the missing people have been identified as Madhu Mia (60 years old), Sukurjan Nessa (45 years old), Amina Parveen (8 years old), Rahul Amin (7 years old), Aryan Islam (4 years old), and Junufa Yasmin (5 years old).
