A Delhi government minister criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, stating that pollution is not a one-day problem, and announced that air purifiers will be installed in 10,000 classrooms across Delhi.

Delhi government minister Ashish Sood held a press conference regarding the rising air pollution in the National Capital Region. Minister Sood stated that pollution is not an issue that has only emerged in the last 10 months. Delhi does not have its own distinct weather patterns; pollution in Delhi is significantly contributed to by the surrounding states. During the press conference, the minister made a major announcement, stating that the Education Department has issued a tender for installing air purifiers in 10,000 classrooms. Eventually, air purifiers will be installed in all classrooms in Delhi. Smart classrooms will now also have clean air.

Minister cites CAG report
Taking a dig at Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj, Minister Ashish Sood said, “Some unemployed leaders keep talking about air pollution issues. They claim that Delhi’s AQI meters were installed in green belts. However, 30% of the 20 AQI meters installed in 2018 were located in green belts. This was because their objective was not to reduce pollution. This is not my report; this is the CAG report.”

Arvind Kejriwal government brought the odd-even scheme
The Delhi government minister said, “These unemployed leaders say that Arvind Kejriwal brought schemes like the odd-even scheme. However, media reports show why it did not reduce pollution. Similarly, they talk about the ‘Red Light On, Engine Off’ campaign. The DPCC (Delhi Pollution Control Committee) stated that this scheme was ineffective. These people were only engaging in PR exercises.”

Kejriwal had money for advertisements
Minister Ashish Sood said, “If pollution in Delhi is caused by dust, as experts suggest, then they should have brought in sweeping machines and improved public transport. They didn’t have money for public transport, but they had money for advertisements.”

Pollution is not a one-day problem
During the press conference, the minister said, “They talked about the EV policy. Even in this scheme, they did not provide the Rs 45 crore subsidy that was promised. Our government is providing that money now. Pollution is not a one-day problem. It requires a long-term administrative plan.”
