A major administrative reshuffle has been made in Assam ahead of the assembly elections. Sushanta Vishwa Sharma, brother of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been appointed SSP of CID (Women and Child Crime).

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s brother and Barpeta SSP Sushanta Vishwa Sharma has been transferred. This major change in the state’s police department comes just before the assembly elections. Sushanta Vishwa Sharma has been appointed Senior SSP of CID (Crimes against Women and Children). Pushkin Jain will replace him as the new SSP of Barpeta. Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) Harekrishna Nath has been appointed SSP of CID (White Collar Crime), and will be replaced by Hiranya Kumar Barman.

Pranjal Barua appointed DSP of Sadiya
Pranjal Barua, Assistant Commissioner of Police of Basistha, has been appointed DSP of Sadiya. He will be replaced by STF DSP Satyendra Singh Hazari. Sadiya DSP Naimuddin has been appointed DSP (Security) of Charaideo, while the current officer there, Mrinal Kumar Das, has been appointed DSP (Security). Rituparna Gogoi, DSP of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, has been appointed DSP of Tinsukia. He will be replaced by Amar Jyoti Saikia. All these changes were made by order of Ajay Tiwari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department.

When can elections be held in Assam?
Assam Assembly elections are expected to be held in March-April 2026. The term of the current Assembly expires in May 2026. In the last Assembly elections held in the state in 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA alliance won a landslide victory. Within the NDA, the BJP won 60 seats, the Asom Gana Parishad won 9, and the United People’s Party Liberal won 6, giving the alliance a total of 75 seats. The Congress-led Mahajot won 50 seats, with the Congress being reduced to 29 and the AIUDF to 16. The NDA formed the government in the state for the second consecutive time, marking the first such occasion for any party or alliance other than the Congress in Assam.
