A major train accident has occurred in Mexico. Authorities reported on Sunday (December 28) that at least 13 people have died after an Interoceanic train derailed in the state of Oaxaca.
According to Reuters news agency, the Mexican Navy reported that the train was carrying a total of 250 people, including 9 crew members and 241 passengers. Of these, 193 people are reported to be safe, while 98 were injured, 36 of whom are receiving medical attention. Authorities said the accident occurred between the towns of Chivela and Nizanda.
What the Mexican President said
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on the social media platform X that five of the injured are in serious condition and added that senior officials have been sent to the scene to assist the families of those killed. Mexico’s Attorney General, Ernestina Godoy Ramos, said in a social media post that the Attorney General’s office has launched an investigation into the incident.
The Interoceanic train was inaugurated in 2023 by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It is part of a larger Interoceanic Corridor project and was designed to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Mexico’s Pacific port of Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf coast.
This train is significant for Mexico
The Mexican government has sought to develop this isthmus as a strategic trade corridor. The goal is to expand ports, railways, and industrial infrastructure to create a route that can compete with the Panama Canal. This train is also part of a broader effort to expand passenger and freight rail in southern Mexico and boost economic development in the region.
