A study conducted in six districts of Bihar revealed that uranium (U238) was found in the milk of lactating women, putting the health of 70 percent of babies at risk.

Breast milk is considered the best food for a child, providing the right amount of nutrients for a child’s development. However, a study conducted in six districts of Bihar has raised concerns. The Mahavir Cancer Institute in Patna conducted this important study, which also involved scientists from AIIMS, Delhi.

According to a Times of India report, this study was conducted between October 2021 and July 2024. Breast milk samples from 40 women in Bhojpur, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Katihar, and Nalanda districts were examined. The investigation revealed the presence of uranium (U238) in the milk of every breastfeeding woman in these districts. Its concentrations ranged from 0 to 5.25 g/L.

Danger to 70% of children
However, no country or organization has yet established a safe limit for uranium in breast milk. Of these, the highest average levels were found in Khagaria, the lowest in Nalanda, and the highest in a sample from Katihar. The report revealed that this uranium could pose a health risk to approximately 70 percent of children.

AIIMS doctor Ashok Sharma stated that it is not yet known where the uranium is coming from. The Geological Survey of India is investigating. He added that if uranium has entered food and drinks, it could cause cancer, brain problems, and affect children’s growth. Bihar already has toxic elements like arsenic, lead, and mercury in its water and soil.

Pollution Reaching Infants Directly
He also stated that excessive dependence on groundwater, wastewater from factories, and the long-term use of chemical fertilizers have worsened the situation. The detection of uranium in breast milk indicates that the pollution has reached infants directly. Experts stated that infants are most at risk because their bodies are developing. They absorb metals quickly, and being underweight can make them more vulnerable.

This can lead to kidney damage, brain problems, developmental delays, and an increased risk of cancer in the future. However, doctors also emphasized that breastfeeding should not be discontinued, as it is the best and most essential nutrition for a child. They also urged the government and agencies to immediately initiate water testing, pollution monitoring, and health safety measures.
