Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal reacted strongly to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s statement on pollution, questioning when this new science emerged that the AQI (Air Quality Index) has now become equivalent to temperature.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has strongly reacted to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s statement on pollution. CM Rekha Gupta had said that the government is using mist sprayers to control pollution at hotspots. Arvind Kejriwal responded by saying that the CM’s statements make it clear that the government is trying to hide pollution data. He also mocked the Chief Minister’s claim that the AQI is “like temperature.” Kejriwal questioned when this new science emerged that the AQI has now become like temperature.

Arvind Kejriwal said that the Chief Minister has at least admitted that water is being sprayed wherever AQI monitors are installed so that the truth about pollution does not reach the people of Delhi. Kejriwal said that it is clearly a game of hiding data and showing “clean air.”

AQI is like a temperature
In an interview, CM Rekha Gupta was asked about the opposition’s allegations of spraying water on air monitors at hotspots to manipulate pollution data. CM Rekha replied, “Tell me, what is a hotspot? A hotspot is a place where there is the most pollution. Right? What is the solution? You spray there, you provide water. You work to improve the soil, so you will only spray at the hotspots.”

The CM further said, “Does using monitors reduce the AQI? AQI is like a temperature that you can measure with any instrument, so providing water is the only solution, which is what we are doing.”

Government is presenting fake data
The Chief Minister’s comments came amidst a heated debate over why the government’s AQI figures are not reflecting the deteriorating air quality, even though pollution is worsening. The Aam Aadmi Party has repeatedly claimed that the government is presenting fake data. The BJP has denied this claim. CM Rekha Gupta had described the national capital’s winter pollution as an “old” problem. The political battle intensified earlier this month after Chief Minister Rekha said that the Delhi government was planning to use mist spray technology to combat air pollution. She said the government would install 305 mist sprayers at nine pollution hotspots in the city.
