Clashes broke out between student organisations and Jai Bhim members at Odisha’s prestigious Utkal University on Tuesday. At least 9 people were injured in the clash. Among the injured, 8, including students and Jai Bhim activists, suffered minor injuries, while one student was seriously injured and was admitted to Capital Hospital. ABVP, in its clarification on the violence, said that the organisation has no involvement in any kind of violence on the campus.
Utkal University students, some ABVP and NSUI members protested against the Jai Bhim organisation organising a programme at the institute’s convention centre, which created tension there. Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and hundreds of Jai Bhim supporters were attending the event. However, the convention centre is usually reserved for university or government programmes.
Tight security on campus after violence
In view of the tense situation inside the campus, the police had to intervene. To maintain law and order, four platoons of police and two ACPs had to be deployed in the university campus.
Reacting to the clash and violence, the student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said that the uproar between students and non-students during the program of a political person in Utkal University is an unfortunate incident. The Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the University have created chaos in the university by allowing a political program to be held on the campus. Discontent and violence was seen between two factions among the students regarding this incident.
We do not support violence: ABVP
ABVP said, “Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has not and will not support the beating of students by non-students and any kind of violence in the university, so action should be taken against all those involved in the violence during the program in the university.”
Along with this, the state secretary of ABVP clearly said that not a single worker of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Odisha was involved in the violence, rather we demand strict action against those who committed violence and attacked the media.
Meanwhile, after the violence, members of both ABVP and Jai Bhim also met DCP Pinak Mishra and demanded his intervention in the incident. The DCP said, “Bheem Army was organizing the event at the convention center with the permission of the university authorities and we had also deployed police for it. But some students of the university opposed the event, which created tension. There was a scuffle after the event as well. However, the situation was brought under control immediately.
