The Bihar Assembly elections are nearing. Latest data from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has released, according to which two-thirds of the MLAs in the current Assembly have declared criminal cases against themselves. Nearly half of the MLAs from various political parties face serious charges.
According to the ADR report, these figures were released based on information provided in the election affidavits of 241 out of 243 MLAs. The data for two of these MLAs has not been analyzed due to incomplete information in their affidavits.
The ADR report shows that 158, or 66% of the current MLAs in the Bihar Assembly, have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 119, or 49%, are facing serious criminal charges. Of these, 16 MLAs have murder charges registered against them, while 30 MLAs face attempted murder charges. Eight MLAs have been accused of involvement in crimes against women.
How many MLAs from which party have provided information?
According to the ADR report, among MLAs from different parties, 53 each from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), 21 from the Janata Dal (United), 14 from the Congress, 9 from the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, 2 each from the CPI (Marxist) and CPI, 1 each from the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and AIMIM, as well as 2 independent MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
MLAs Falling in the Serious Crimes Category
The MLAs of the Bihar Assembly who have been charged with serious criminal charges include 43 from the RJD, 41 from the BJP, 13 from the JD(U), 9 from the Congress, and 7 from the CPI(ML). Elections for the 243-member Bihar Assembly will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with the results declared on November 14. The report also examines the demographic profile of the outgoing Bihar Assembly. It states that 122 MLAs (over 50%) are between the ages of 51 and 80, while 119 MLAs are between 25 and 50. Only 29 MLAs (12%) are women in the Bihar Assembly.
