After the consecration of Ramlala idol in Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi temple, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a big announcement regarding solar energy. PM Modi has promised to install solar rooftops in 1 crore houses in the country under the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana.

He said that the government is going to bring this scheme to reduce the electricity bills of the poor and middle class of the country and to make India self-reliant in the energy sector.

This will increase the production of solar energy in India. However, recent research by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) shows that the potential to install rooftop solar in India is quite high. Neeraj Kuldeep, Senior Program Lead, CEEW, says that there is vast potential for installing rooftop solar in India in both rural and urban areas.

According to a recent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), more than 640 GW of rooftop solar can technically be installed in Indian homes. Currently, about 7-8 lakh households have rooftop solar installed and have benefited from the government capital subsidy program, resulting in about 4 GW of solar capacity. Today’s new announcement of lighting 1 crore homes with solar energy will provide the necessary impetus to take the rooftop solar sector to its peak.

Neeraj says that after this announcement, 12-14 times increase in rooftop solar houses will add 20-25 GW additional solar energy capacity. This will not only help the states in saving electricity subsidy but will also help in improving the financial condition of power distribution companies (DISCOMS). This will pave the way for greater use of renewable energy in India. For this, there is a need to run proper awareness campaign.

Let us tell you that considering the houses in India, the capacity to install rooftop solar is many times more than one crore. Even after this scheme, about 75 percent power generation capacity will remain present in India.
