Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Monday said the party will contest the 2027 assembly elections in Goa and Gujarat alone without allying with the Congress. The former Delhi chief minister was on a day-long visit to Goa to inaugurate the party office in Margao. Atishi said, “We are preparing to contest the elections (in Goa and Gujarat) on our own. There is no talk of alliance yet.”
AAP had won 2 MLAs in Goa
Atishi said the people of Goa voted to bring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in 2022 and during the same time the Congress won 11 seats, but its 8 MLAs later joined the BJP. She said the Congress is the main opposition party with only three MLAs and the AAP has two MLAs.
Our MLAs are still with the party – Atishi
Atishi said, ‘When two AAP candidates won the 2022 elections, there were rumours that they would not last even two months in the party, but they are still with the party because they have not come to politics to make money.’ When asked if AAP is not interested in an alliance with like-minded parties, she said, ‘When 8 out of 11 MLAs join BJP, what is the same ideology? AAP has shown that two of our MLAs were elected and they are still standing with the party. BJP also tried to woo our MLAs.’
Winning elections is the only objective
She said, ‘We are not interested in such politics in which winning elections and making money is the only objective. Our interest in politics is to work for the people.’ Talking about the party’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, Atishi said that the question is not what will happen to AAP, but what will happen to the people of Delhi.
BJP shuts down Mohalla clinics in Delhi
He said, ‘BJP has already announced that they will shut down 250 Mohalla clinics. They have already announced that they will stop free medicine.’ He said that party leader Arvind Kejriwal had warned that if AAP loses, power cuts will start, the quality of education in government schools will deteriorate again and this is already happening.
Stopped from working in Delhi
He said, ‘The work of the Aam Aadmi Party government was stopped in a planned manner. If you look at the Delhi elections, everything was done in it from manipulation to misuse of machinery and intimidation of voters. Delhi has never seen such an election before, but despite all this, there was a difference of only two percent votes between BJP and AAP.’
BJP running away from election promises – Atishi
Atishi alleged that the BJP has not fulfilled its election promise of giving Rs 2,500 to the women of Delhi. He said, ‘PM Modi had assured that on March 8, on Women’s Day, all women will get the first installment in their bank account. Forget about getting the installment, even the registration for the scheme has not started.’ He said, ‘This shows that the BJP has no intention of fulfilling its promises.’
