An Air India Express flight from Bengaluru to Kochi made an emergency landing in Bengaluru after one of its engines caught fire, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) said on Sunday.
Air India Express issued a statement regarding the incident, saying that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the plane and no one was injured.
According to sources, a fire was detected in one of the engines a few minutes after the plane took off. The crew members informed the air traffic controller about this.
After this, the plane was emergency landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here and the fire was brought under control. A BIAL spokesperson said, “On May 18, 2024, the plane going from Bengaluru to Kochi was emergency landed at Bengaluru airport at 11.12 pm due to the information of fire in one of its engines.”
BIAL itself handles the operations of KIA. A BIAL spokesperson said that a full-scale emergency was declared and the fire was immediately brought under control.
All 179 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from the plane. An Air India Express spokesperson said, “A thorough investigation will be conducted in collaboration with the regulators to ascertain the cause of the fire.”
