After the deployment of National Guards in the capital Washington DC, US President Donald Trump is also going to deploy military in Chicago city of Illinois state. According to the report of Washington Post, Pentagon (headquarters of US Defense Department) has been working on the plan of military deployment in Chicago for the last few weeks.
More than thousand National Guards can reach Chicago by September. Trump had ordered to deploy 800 National Guards in Washington on 12 August. He said that this is being done to improve the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital. Trump’s decision is related to action on crime, illegal immigration and homelessness.
Trump had said – There is chaos in Chicago
Trump had indicated on Friday itself that his eyes are on Chicago. He had said that there is chaos in Chicago. You have an incompetent mayor. Very incompetent. And we will probably fix it next time. Trump also told the names of the cities which he wants to clean up.
Officials associated with the matter say that military intervention in Chicago has been planned for a long time. The city is working closely with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to search for illegal immigrants.
Trump is being criticized for his statements
Trump has been strongly criticized by mayors and state governors for his statements about capturing cities. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has said that Trump is trying to spread chaos. Pritzker said, Trump used Los Angeles and Washington DC as a testing ground for authoritarian encroachment, he is now thinking of capturing other states and cities as well.
The governor said, Trump’s goal is to create fear among the people and destabilize existing public safety efforts. He is misusing his power. At the same time, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed serious concern over Trump’s statement and future plans. Johnson said, this view of the President is wrong and full of sophistry.
Use of 52-year-old rule in Washington DC
President Trump has used the Home Rule Act of 1970 to deploy National Guards in Washington DC. This gives the President the authority to take control of the city’s police for 48 hours in case of emergency. If the President informs the parliamentary committees that make laws related to Washington DC, then the control of the police can be kept for a long time.
However, it is not clear yet whether Trump has given this formal information or not. According to the rule, if the control over the city has to be kept for more than 30 days, then it is necessary to pass a law in the Parliament.
