Pakistan’s delegation in Moscow: Amid the ongoing tension with India, a high-level delegation from Pakistan reached the Russian capital Moscow on Tuesday. The delegation met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to President Vladimir Putin.
The delegation was led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s special assistant Syed Tariq Fatemi. Russia’s state news agency TASS confirmed the handing over of the letter, citing the Pakistani embassy. The visit comes at a time when security cooperation and political coordination between Russia and India is steadily increasing.
Lavrov was briefed on the situation in South Asia
During the meeting, the Pakistani delegation informed Russia about the situation in South Asia. Lavrov stressed the need for direct dialogue to restore trust between the two countries. The Russian Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that dialogue is the way to build trust.
Desire to increase bilateral cooperation with Russia
Syed Tariq Fatimi also conveyed PM Sharif’s good wishes to Putin and expressed Pakistan’s desire to increase bilateral cooperation in various fields such as energy, transport, trade. The recent tension between India and Pakistan began after the Pahalgam terrorist attack on May 7. In response, India carried out surgical strikes on terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). After this, Pakistan tried to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10, but the Indian Army gave a strong response to these attempts. On May 10, after talks between the DGMOs (Director General of Military Operations) of both the countries, an agreement was reached to stop military actions.
Pakistan’s exercise to garner global support against India
Pakistan had announced last month that it would send teams of experts to many countries of the world so that it could present its side of the four-day conflict with India before the international community. The Moscow visit is considered to be a part of this strategy.
Indian delegation’s visit to Russia also in discussion
It is also noteworthy that a few days ago, an Indian parliamentary delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi visited Russia. During this, the representatives informed Russia about Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and tried to garner international support.
