Cuddalore: There has been a major upset in Tamil Nadu politics a few months before the assembly elections. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) led by TTV Dhinakaran on Wednesday announced its separation from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance. Dhinakaran accused the BJP of ‘betraying’ him and said that his party will no longer be a part of this alliance i.e. NDA. Let us tell you that AMMK contested on 2 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but did not succeed. Let us tell you that assembly elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu around April 2026.
Was AMMK founded in 2018?
AMMK was founded in 2018 by TTV Dhinakaran, who was earlier the leader of AIADMK i.e. AIADMK. After being expelled from AIADMK, Dhinakaran formed his own party, which claims to carry forward Jayalalithaa’s legacy. According to AMMK, the main objective of the party is to fight for the rights of the people of Tamil Nadu and raise their voice. Speaking to reporters in Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore district, Dinakaran said, ‘Our party AMMK was started against the betrayal of some people. We thought that perhaps the people sitting in Delhi would change or they would be replaced, but nothing like that happened.’
‘We waited for many months’
Tauntingly, Dinakaran said, ‘We are not fools to keep carrying others on our shoulders. We waited for many months that a good decision would come from Delhi, but now we do not see anything happening.’ Dinakaran made it clear that his party is now completely separating from NDA. He said, ‘We will announce our next strategy in December.’ However, he did not tell who are the people behind this ‘betrayal’.
Another party was out of NDA
AMMK is the second party to separate from NDA in Tamil Nadu. Recently expelled from AIADMK, O. Panneerselvam also pulled his party out of NDA. In Tamil Nadu, NDA is currently led by AIADMK, which again allied with BJP in April this year. Both the parties parted ways for some time in 2023, but later joined hands again.
How was AMMK’s performance in 2024?
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, AMMK contested in alliance with NDA on two seats in Tamil Nadu, Theni and Tiruchirapalli, but faced defeat in both places. Dinakaran himself tried his luck from Theni seat, but did not succeed. This decision of Dinakaran has created a new stir in the politics of Tamil Nadu. Now all eyes are on what new announcement AMMK makes in December and whether it will move towards a new alliance. At present, this is being considered a big setback for BJP and NDA, as they are busy strengthening their base in Tamil Nadu.
