An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands early on Tuesday morning. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. At present, there is no news of any damage or casualties. The Andaman Sea is a seismically active area, so earthquakes are common. This has come about two weeks after the recent earthquakes in Delhi-NCR.
Strong tremors of earthquake were felt in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands early in the morning. During this time the intensity of the earthquake was more than 6 on the Richter scale. However, there has been no loss of life or property even after the strong tremors. However, these tremors have scared people.

The Andaman Sea and its surrounding island areas are considered very sensitive in terms of earthquakes. People often feel earthquake tremors here. Earthquake tremors have been felt at many places across the country in the month of July. In the country’s capital Delhi alone, earthquakes have been felt thrice in the month of July. The continuous earthquakes have alerted people, experts and disaster management agencies.
On July 22, earthquakes were also felt in Kutch, Gujarat. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 3.6 on the Earth scale. Seeing the increase in seismic activities, the Disaster Management Department is constantly monitoring the situation.
Why do earthquakes occur?
The outer surface of the earth looks calm and stable to everyone. However, there is always turmoil inside it. Hundreds of earthquakes occur every year due to the collision of geological plates. Regarding these tremors, experts say that the earth is situated on 12 tectonic plates. When these plates collide with each other, the energy that is released causes earthquakes.
