An elephant calf drowned while bathing in a pond in Raigarh; a herd of elephants retrieved the carcass.

A tragic incident has occurred in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district. An elephant calf drowned while bathing in a pond. Forest officials confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Dharamjaigarh Forest Division’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Jitendra Upadhyay, stated that the accident occurred on Tuesday when a herd of approximately 22 elephants went to bathe in a pond located in Auranara, Chhal Range. During the incident, a female elephant calf, less than a year old, drowned and died.

Elephants Rescued
The DFO stated that the pond, located within the forest, was 10 to 12 feet deep. After the calf’s death, other elephants in the herd pulled its body out of the pond. Upon receiving information from the Forest Department, a team was immediately dispatched to the scene.

On Wednesday morning, a team of three doctors conducted a post-mortem examination of the elephant calf. The doctors confirmed that the calf died due to drowning. Following the post-mortem, the deceased calf was cremated in the forest.

Divisional Forest Officer Upadhyay stated that a herd of approximately 50 elephants is currently roaming in various areas of the Dharamjaigarh Forest Division. As a precaution, the department is issuing announcements in nearby villages to alert villagers and maintain a distance from the elephants. (Input – Bhasha)
