Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday addressed students on National Space Day in Himachal Pradesh’s Una, saying that Lord Hanuman can be considered the first person to travel in space and asked them to look beyond textbooks to connect with India’s traditions.
The event was organised at Pradhan Mantri Shri School, where Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur interacted with students. He asked the students, “Who was the first to travel in space?” The students’ answers were vague, to which Thakur gave his answer with a smile, “Mujhe to lagta hai Hanuman ji tha.” He also shared a video of this interaction on his social media account X, in the caption of which he wrote, “Pavansut Hanuman ji… the first astronaut.”
“One should not limit oneself only to the present”
He clarified his view that we should not limit ourselves only to the present. He said, “Until we know our thousands of years old tradition, knowledge and culture, we will remain the same as the British have taught us.” He urged students and teachers to look beyond books and see the nation, its traditions and its knowledge. He said that if we look from this perspective, we will get to learn a lot of new things.
Anurag Thakur’s remarks come at a time when India is setting new records in space exploration. Earlier this year, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the second Indian astronaut to go to space after four decades after Rakesh Sharma’s historic flight in 1984. Globally, Yuri Gagarin of Soviet Russia was the first man to go to space with a crew in 1961. His historic journey lasted 108 minutes, in which he orbited the Earth once.
