An FIR has been ordered against three senior Congress leaders in Assam. The Assam cabinet has directed the police to register a case against senior Congress leaders Debabrata Saikia, Bhupen Kumar Bora, and Mira Borthakur for allegedly making “objectionable gestures” towards women during a recent rally.
Gestures were very bad
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters after the cabinet meeting, “This gesture was a collective insult to the women of Assam. I saw their gestures; they were very bad. No normal leader or gentleman would make such gestures towards a woman.” He said the cabinet decided to direct the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a criminal case against the Congress leaders under appropriate legal provisions.
Such leaders should be expelled from the party
Earlier, Sarma, while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a government program, had said that the Congress should expel Bora, the former state unit president, and Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, for “insulting women.” Borthakur is the president of the state Mahila Congress and was present with the other two leaders during the rally.
Objectionable gestures made from atop a bus
Sarma claimed that objectionable gestures were made from atop a bus being used for a statewide Congress rally in Guwahati a few days ago. He said these gestures were directed at all Assamese girls and women. Sarma said, “If the party (Congress) does not expel them (Bora and Saikia), I don’t think they will be able to go anywhere. This is a matter concerning all women, not of any particular caste.”
Video clip to be sent to the Women’s Commission
CM Sarma said he has directed that the video clip be sent to the Women’s Commission so that they can take cognizance of the matter. He said, “I cannot even imagine that a leader of the opposition, a former party president, would make such a gesture, especially when Mira Borthakur (president of the state women’s wing of the Congress) was with them.” Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has also been accused of serious charges.
The Chief Minister expressed surprise that the incident was not reported by the local media and claimed that he received the clip from an acquaintance in New Delhi. Sharma said that in the state cabinet meeting, it was also decided to refer the matter of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged Pakistani connections to the Home Ministry.
He said that the “three main characters” in this case are a Member of Parliament, his British wife, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sharma and the ruling BJP have been attacking state Congress chief Gogoi over his wife’s alleged links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. According to the Chief Minister, the cabinet, in its Saturday meeting, also approved the formation of the 8th State Pay Commission, along with land allocation for various educational institutions.
