In Assam’s Sribhumi district, police shot a suspected drug smuggler who was trying to escape from custody, injuring him. The incident took place on Saturday morning, when the police arrested the suspected smuggler with drugs. During this, the smuggler crushed a constable with his vehicle. Constable Ujjal Bora died during treatment in critical condition.
The police officer said that after the suspected smuggler was caught, when he was trying to escape from the police investigation, he crushed the constable with his vehicle. Constable Bora died during treatment in critical condition on Saturday morning. The police reached the spot and chased the truck, which later crashed. The police arrested the driver and assistant of the truck and seized drugs worth more than Rs 4 crore from the vehicle.
Attempt to escape from custody
The officer said that the suspected smuggler vehicle driver was later taken to the crime scene and there he tried to escape from custody. During this, the police fired a bullet, which hit the suspected smuggler. At present, the suspected smuggler is being treated at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
Chief Minister Sarma’s reaction
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Home Minister said that Constable Bora’s death is not being considered a mere case of accident. The Chief Minister said, “It was not an accident. We are looking at it as an attempt to murder. The police have arrested the accused and we will get more information after interrogation.”
Meanwhile, the body of Constable Ujjal Bora was brought to his native place in Jorhat district on Sunday, where he was cremated with police honours. Bora’s death led to mourning in the area. Constable Bora joined the police service in 2022 and his first posting was in Sribhumi district.
