Assam: Himanta government has taken a big decision regarding shops and commercial establishments in Assam. Shops will now remain open 24 hours in some districts of the state. This important decision was taken in the Assam Cabinet meeting. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that now all shops and commercial establishments in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar have been allowed to remain open 24 hours.

CM Himanta posted on X and said that now shops and other commercial establishments will remain open 24 hours in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar without compromising on the rights and facilities of the workers. This decision will not apply to liquor shops and bars.

CM Himanta said that except Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar, shops will be allowed to open till 2 am in the rest of the cities, while in rural areas this time limit will be till 11 pm. The CM clarified that during this time exploitation of workers will not be allowed. They will work for 48 hours a week or a maximum of nine hours daily.

How much overtime can the workers do?

The Assam CM said that if someone wants to work for 24 hours, then he will have to work in three shifts, that is, they will work overtime. This overtime should not exceed 125 hours in three months. During this time, all safety equipment will have to be provided to the workers.

This decision will speed up Assam’s development: CM

The Chief Minister said that businessmen will not be able to make workers work for more than 5 hours continuously. They will also have to be given breaks in between. He said that allowing shops to open 24 hours will help small businesses and if the number of shifts increases, it will create job opportunities. This will also speed up Assam’s development.
