Violence has erupted in Assam ahead of the by-election to the Samaguri assembly seat on November 13. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress have accused each other of firing at supporters in the last 24 hours. Police gave this information on Sunday. It was also alleged that three journalists who went to report on the violence were beaten up by Congress supporters. This incident of violence took place on Saturday.
Firing on MLA Jitu Goswami’s vehicle
Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma accused the Congress of ‘violence under the cover of darkness’ to intimidate BJP workers. He said that no one would be allowed to undermine the democratic process. A police officer said, ‘We received information about the firing incident in Mari Puthikhaiti village of Samaguri. BJP workers alleged that shots were fired at the vehicle of ruling party MLA Jitu Goswami from the house of a Congress worker.
Ismail Hussain’s son Imamuddin shot
Goswami and BJP leader Suresh Bora were travelling in the vehicle, a police official said. However, no one was injured in the incident. “Congress workers alleged that BJP workers fired shots at Imamuddin, son of former zonal panchayat member of the party Ismail Hussain, injuring him in the leg,” the official said.
Admitted to hospital
Police said the injured Imamuddin was rushed to a nearby hospital. According to the official, the allegations are being verified. In another incident, independent candidate Musabbir Ali Ahmed was found seriously injured and unconscious on the road near his house in Katimari Grant area. Ahmed’s supporters immediately rushed him to Nagaon, where he is being treated at a private hospital.
CM targeted Congress
Chief Minister Sharma said in a post on ‘X’, ‘I strongly condemn the attack on Honorable MLA Jitu Goswami in Samaguri by Assam Congress supporters. This is the same Congress, which proudly holds the copy of the Constitution to show on camera and indulges in violence under the cover of darkness to intimidate our workers.’
