At least 11 people were killed and more than 30 injured when a truck rammed into a bar in the Caribbean country of Dominican Republic. Officials said Civil Defense Director Juan Salas said the accident occurred early Sunday in the southern community of Azua, west of the capital Santo Domingo.
Police spokesman Diego Pesquera said one of the victims was a police sergeant. Salas said it was not immediately clear what caused the accident, although officials were examining CCTV cameras in the area.
Driver absconded after the accident
Pesquera said the truck driver fled the scene and has not been traced. He said police detained a passenger in the truck, which was carrying avocados. Most of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Salas said their condition was not immediately known.
