Baku: Azerbaijan has taken a big step after its plane crashed in Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan has suspended all its flights to Russia. The aviation company announced the suspension of flights to several airports in Russia on Friday. The company made this announcement citing potential flight safety risks after one of its planes crashed. Many experts blamed the failure of the Russian air defense system for this accident.
The Embraer 190 aircraft of the Azerbaijan Aviation Company took off from the capital Baku on Wednesday for the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus. Its route was changed shortly after takeoff. After crossing the Caspian Sea, the plane crashed while trying to land in Aktau, Kazakhstan. 38 people died in the accident and all 29 people were injured. Officials in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia did not give information about the possible cause of the crash until the official investigation is completed, but an Azerbaijani MP blamed Moscow for the accident. Rasim Musabekov told Azerbaijan’s news agency ‘Turan’ on Thursday that the plane was fired upon in the sky over Grozny.
Air crash is being investigated
He asked Russia to officially apologize. When asked about Musabekov’s statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment and said it would be up to investigators to determine the cause of the accident. Peskov told reporters, “The air crash is being investigated and we do not think we have the right to make any assessments until the investigation concludes.” Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement that the country’s investigators are working in Grozny as part of the investigation into the accident. As the official investigation into the crash began, some aviation experts said holes seen in the rear of the plane indicated it may have been hit by a Russian air defense system in retaliation for the Ukrainian drone attack.
