Aziz Qureshi, 83-year-old senior Congress leader and former governor of three states, passes away

Aziz Qureshi, a veteran Congress leader who was often in the headlines for his outspoken statements and was said to be close to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, died on Friday. He was 83 years old. Aziz Qureshi was ill for a long time. He breathed his last at 10.30 am in Apollo Hospital, Bhopal. Aziz Qureshi has been the Governor of three states, while he was counted among the veteran Congress leaders of Madhya Pradesh. He had fulfilled many important responsibilities in the Congress Party.

Aziz Qureshi was born on 24 April 1940 in Bhopal. He has been the Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Election Committee, founding member of Indian Youth Congress, President of MP Fisheries Department Corporation and Aziz Qureshi was also made the President of MP Urdu Academy by the Madhya Pradesh Government on 24 January 2020.

Have been governors of these states
Apart from being the Cabinet Minister of Madhya Pradesh, he was also elected as Lok Sabha MP from Satna, MP in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections. Aziz Qureshi has also been the governor of three states. These three states are Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Mizoram. Aziz first became the Governor of Uttarakhand in 2012, then in 2014 he was made the Governor (additional charge) of Uttar Pradesh while in 2015 he was made the 15th Governor of Mizoram.

Aziz Qureshi was the publicity in-charge of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee from 1961 to 62, the public relations cell was his responsibility. He became MLA in 1972 and remained Irrigation Minister from 72-75. He had special interest in music and travelling. Used to participate enthusiastically in social work. He especially strived for the empowerment of the weaker section of the society.

Have given controversial statements many times
Aziz Qureshi has also been associated with controversial statements. He not only targeted BJP but also attacked his own party Congress. Aziz Qureshi had once said in Vidisha, MP – Nehru’s heirs, Congress people, are taking out religious yatras today. Along with this, he had also said that if my statement hurts anyone then they can expel him from the Congress.

Similarly, during the Maharashtra Assembly elections, he made a scathing attack on BJP and RSS. He had said that there is no harm in joining hands with the devil to defeat BJP. At the same time, he once created controversy by advocating the installation of Jinnah’s picture in Aligarh Muslim University. He had said that taking Jinnah’s name is not a crime.
