Bangladesh: On the occasion of the first anniversary of the coup, Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation and said that parliamentary elections will be held in February next year.

It has been a year since the coup in Bangladesh on August 5 last year. On August 5 last year, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government fell after a student-led movement and nationwide violence and she took refuge in India. After this, Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus took over the reins of the country as the chief advisor.

Parliamentary elections will be held in February 2026

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the coup, Mohammad Yunus addressed the nation and announced to hold parliamentary elections in February next year. He said, “I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner on behalf of the interim government, requesting to hold national elections before Ramadan in February 2026.” This announcement has been made when these elections were earlier scheduled to be held in April 2026. This address was given on the first anniversary of last year’s ‘July Rebellion’, after which Sheikh Hasina had to step down from power.

India-Bangladesh relations soured

After this coup in Bangladesh, relations between India and Bangladesh have become very tense. The new government of Bangladesh strongly objected to the granting of asylum to Sheikh Hasina in India. He also formally urged the Indian government to send Hasina back. The new interim government seems to be more inclined towards China and Pakistan and anti-India statements have also been made from Bangladesh many times.

In response to this, India has also taken a tough stand. India has imposed controls on the import of readymade garments and many other items coming from Bangladesh. Also, transit and border trade were also closed for the market of Northeast India.

PM Modi and Yunus meet in Bangkok

Amidst these tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mohammad Yunus met on April 4, 2025 during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. During this, Prime Minister Modi expressed his concern about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. During this meeting, Yunus also presented a photograph of an old honour received by Prime Minister Modi in 2015.
