During this, the protesters issued an ultimatum to the CJ and other judges of the Appellate Division to step down by 1 pm (local time). According to The Daily Star report, the protesters had warned that if he did not resign, they would storm the residences of the apex court judges and the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice told the media that he has decided to step down keeping in mind the safety of the judges of the apex court and lower courts across the country. He said that he would send his resignation to President Mohammad Shahabuddin by Saturday evening.
Ministers of the interim government made allegations
Interim government’s legal adviser Asif Nazrul said that there are many controversies regarding Obaidul Hasan. When he went abroad, he allegedly stayed at the residences of various Awami League leaders. Interim government’s Sports Ministry adviser Asif Mahmud also demanded the unconditional resignation of Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan. The report said that the Chief Justice postponed the meeting of the judges amid the tension.
This is why the controversy started
Actually, after the formation of the new government, the Chief Justice was holding a meeting without consultation. The protesters alleged that the judges were hatching a conspiracy against the new government, which caused outrage and demanded accountability. Amid the unrest, the Chief Justice postponed the meeting of the full court. On Saturday, at around 10:30 am, a crowd of students and lawyers gathered in the court. After this, resignation was demanded.
