Former India coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday backed Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan to make a strong comeback. Both of them have been dropped from the central contract for ignoring the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play in Ranji Trophy.
BCCI on Wednesday announced its centrally contracted players for this year in which Iyer and Ishan have not got a place.
Ravi Shastri came out in support of Iyer and Ishaan
Ravi Shastri wrote on ‘X’, ‘Returning to the game of cricket defines your spirit. Keep up the courage, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Face the challenges and come back even stronger. Your past achievements speak volumes and I have no doubt that you will be at the top once.
25-year-old Ishan Kishan did not play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy despite withdrawing from the South Africa tour in December last year citing personal reasons. Instead he focused on preparing for the IPL to be held next month. After being dropped from the Indian team after the second Test against England, Iyer did not make himself available for Mumbai’s Ranji quarter-final against Baroda. However, he has been selected for the Ranji semi-finals starting from March 2.
Big statement given on BCCI’s decision
Praising the board, Ravi Shastri wrote, ‘Praise to BCCI and Jay Shah for the game-changing step with the fast bowling contract. An important step in preparation for Australia later this year. The emphasis on Test cricket and domestic cricket is a powerful message that sets the right direction for the future of our beloved game.
Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar also praised BCCI for rewarding players willing to work hard in the Test format. Manjrekar wrote, ‘Thank you BCCI for rewarding those players who want to play hard cricket and are ready to face ‘tough test’ as cricketers.’
Iyer and Ishan out of central contract
While announcing the central contracts for 2023-24, BCCI again advised the players to give priority to playing domestic cricket when they are not playing for the national team. By keeping Iyer and Ishan out of the central contracts, BCCI has given a strong message to the young players who are more focused on getting IPL contracts rather than playing first-class cricket.
