Beijing: At least 24 people killed after a section of highway collapses in southern China

Beijing: Heavy rain has wreaked havoc in China. At least 24 people were killed when a section of a highway collapsed in southern China on Wednesday. This information has been given by the Chinese government media. 18 cars were thrown down the slope as 17.9 meters (58.7 ft) of the highway collapsed. Authorities in Meizhou city of Guangdong province said the accident occurred at around 2 a.m., just after midnight. According to China’s government news agency Xinhua, the death toll has reached 24 as of Wednesday afternoon. The death toll may increase.

What did the eyewitnesses say?
Parts of Guangdong province have experienced heavy rain and hailstorm in the past two weeks, causing flood-like conditions. Some villages in Meizhou flooded in April and the city has experienced heavy rainfall in recent days. Eyewitnesses told local media that they heard a loud noise while passing by just before part of the road collapsed and saw a several meter wide crater forming behind them.

the scene was horrifying
Smoke and fire are visible at the scene in videos and pictures shown by China’s local media. The highway strip is leaning downwards in flames. Piles of destroyed cars could also be seen on the slope leading down from the highway. Along with the broken portion of the road, the ground beneath the highway is also visible sunken. Rescue workers took 30 people to hospital, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
