Beijing: China has established its first atmospheric monitoring station in Antarctica. China is strengthening its presence there by building this research station in this icy and resource-rich southern continent. According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), work started at the Zhongshan National Atmospheric Background Administration (CMA) located in ‘Larsman Hills’ of East Antarctica from Sunday.
Information related to atmosphere structure will be available
An article published on the CMA website on Monday said, “This station will provide continuous and long-term operation overview of concentration changes in atmospheric components of Antarctica. Along with this, it will also provide reliable data and information about the average state of features related to atmospheric structure in the region.
China is testing monitoring stations
According to the Hong Kong-based ‘South China Morning Post’, the article states that the monitoring data will ‘study the global response to climate change.’ This is China’s ninth atmospheric monitoring station and its first station abroad. Apart from this, 10 new atmospheric monitoring stations are currently being tested in China.
The impact of human activities on the environment will be studied
Ding Mingyu, director of the Institute of Global Change and Polar Meteorology of the Chinese Academy of Meteorology, said that many information will be obtained from the observations of the new station. This will also help in studying the impact of human activities on the environment.
