At least 126 people died in the earthquake

Tremors were also felt in Kathmandu

Tsering Phuntsog, the Communist Party chief of Gurum village in Tibet, told China’s state news agency ‘Xinhua’ on Tuesday that at least 22 of the 222 residents of Gurum were among the dead. His 74-year-old mother was also among those who lost their lives in the earthquake, while many of his other relatives are still buried under the rubble. Tsering Phuntsog said, ‘When the earthquake struck, even the youth could not come out of their houses, forget about the old and children.’

‘1850 rescue teams deployed’
‘Xinhua’, quoting the city administration in Shigatse, said that according to the initial survey, more than 3,600 houses have collapsed and 30,000 people have been transferred. Chinese media has said that apart from the fire brigade and others, the Ministry of Emergency Management has deployed 1,850 rescue teams. After the earthquake, more than 500 aftershocks have been recorded. The US Geological Survey had reported the magnitude of the earthquake to be 7.1 on the Richter scale, while the China Earthquake Center recorded the magnitude of 6.8.
