Before the assembly elections, Congress has suffered a setback in Jammu and Kashmir. The court has found former Jammu and Kashmir Congress president and candidate from Banihal seat Vikar Rasool Wani and five other accused guilty in a case. The court has sentenced all of them to five months’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 on all five. The court has given this punishment in a 12-year-old case.
During the 2012 assembly elections, a public meeting was organised without permission in the Junior High School located in Meethapur village of Gulavathi. This public meeting was organised by Vikar Rasool Wani. Vikar Rasool was accused of violating the model code of conduct. The court found the allegation to be true and sentenced five people including Vikar.
Apart from Vikar, the people who have been sentenced by the court in this case include Bharat Bhushan Sharma, Sachin, Ikramuddin and Nazim. The court sentenced everyone to five months’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of thousand rupees on each of them.
Voting in Banihal in the first phase
Voting for the 90 assembly seats of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on 18 and 25 September and 1 October. Voting is on 24 seats including Banihal in the first phase. Apart from this, voting is to be held on 26 seats in the second phase and on 40 seats in the third phase. The results will be declared on 4 October. Assembly elections are going to be held in Jammu and Kashmir after 10 years. The last assembly elections were held here in the year 2014.
