Bihar: 12 people died due to lightning in seven districts during the last 24 hours

Twelve people died in seven districts of Bihar due to lightning during the last 24 hours. According to data provided by the State Disaster Management Department, the number of people who died due to lightning since July 1 has reached 42. Of these, 10 people died on Sunday and nine on Saturday.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, three people each died in Jamui and Kaimur, two in Rohtas, one each in Saran, Saharsa, Bhojpur and Gopalganj due to lightning during the last 24 hours.

Be cautious in bad weather
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep condolences on these deaths due to lightning and said that he is with the affected families in this hour of disaster. The Chief Minister has directed to provide financial assistance of four lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister has appealed that everyone should be fully alert during bad weather and follow the suggestions issued from time to time by the Disaster Management Department to avoid lightning in bad weather.

400 deaths due to lightning in the year 2022

According to the latest Bihar Economic Survey (2023-24) report presented in the state assembly during the budget session in February this year, there were 400 lightning-related deaths in the state in 2022. Gaya had the highest number of lightning deaths at 46. This was followed by 23 people in Bhojpur, 21 each in Nawada and Banka, 20 in Aurangabad and 18 each in Nalanda and Kaimur.

Natural disasters and accidents
The survey report said that between 2018 and 2022, 9,687 deaths occurred in the state due to various natural disasters and accidents. The highest number of deaths in 2022-2023 were due to drowning (1,132), followed by road accidents (654) and lightning (400). It said Bihar allocated Rs 430.92 crore for disaster management in 2022-2023, with the biggest share going to localised disasters like lightning and drowning (Rs 285.22 crore).
