The vandalism of a statue of Goddess Durga in Majgama, Purnia district, Bihar, sparked public outrage. Hundreds of people gathered upon hearing the news of the vandalism. The mob quickly set fire to shops and vandalized them. The enraged crowd apprehended the accused youth and brutally beat him.
Meanwhile, police teams from Baisa, Rauta, and Aamor police stations immediately arrived at the scene to control the situation. After considerable effort, the accused was rescued from the mob and taken to a safe location. Since the incident, tension has been high in the area, and additional police forces have been deployed for security reasons. The administration is continuously appealing for peace.
The police confined the youth to a nearby government building to keep him safe, but the angry mob attacked and assaulted the police personnel. Meanwhile, a large number of villagers gathered outside the building, demanding that the youth be handed over to the public. Due to the protests and anger, locals blocked the road by burning tires at several places, further escalating the tension.
According to eyewitnesses, early in the morning, a young man from a particular community arrived at the Majgama Durga Temple and began vandalizing the half-finished idol of Goddess Durga being installed there. He smashed the idol to the ground and broke it. He also damaged other idols in the temple premises. Upon witnessing the incident, people became enraged and grabbed the young man, demanding his name. As soon as the name was revealed, the mob began brutally beating him.
What did the head of the Majgama Panchayat say?
Mohammad Jahangir, head of the Majgama Panchayat, expressed deep concern over the incident. He stated that Durga Puja has been celebrated in the Majgama area with mutual brotherhood and harmony for many years. Both communities participate together in this festival. Consequently, this incident is extremely sad and unfortunate.
The accused youth has been identified as a resident of Rauta Mangalpur, who was currently visiting his maternal home in Vijwar village. The family stated that the young man is mentally disturbed and is undergoing treatment. Given the seriousness of the incident, a heavy police force led by the DSP has been deployed at the scene. A large police force has also been deployed in the village.
