A major corruption case has emerged from Vaishali district, Bihar. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the Railway Construction Department office behind the Hajipur railway station late on Monday evening. The operation lasted for approximately 12 hours and continued until Tuesday morning.
In connection with the case, the CBI team detained Alok Kumar, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Railway Construction Department, after recovering ₹1 crore in cash from his office. During the raid, the team took five people, including Head Clerk Alok Kumar Das and Peon Manik Das, for questioning.
CBI Raid
The CBI launched its operation unexpectedly on Monday evening when its team arrived at the office in vehicles and began questioning the Deputy Chief Engineer and other employees. During the raid, the team thoroughly searched the office rooms and cabinets.
₹1 crore recovered
During the raid, the CBI team recovered ₹1 crore in cash while searching the office. The amount of cash recovered was so large that CBI officials had to call for a note-counting machine to count it. The ₹1 crore (approximately $10 million) was wrapped in various sheets and hidden in a room.
Interrogation of individuals continues
Deputy Chief Engineer Alok Kumar joined the office about two years ago, while Head Clerk Alok Kumar Das and Peon Manik Das had been employed there for the past six months. The CBI team, comprised of about a dozen officers, interrogated the Chief Engineer and other employees throughout the night. This action is a significant step towards curbing corruption in the railway department.
