The election for the Bihar Assembly elections has begun. Voting for the state’s 243 seats will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held on November 6th for 121 seats in 18 districts, while the second phase will be held on November 11th for the remaining 122 seats. Counting of votes will take place on November 14th. The nomination process for both phases has been completed, and the main contest is between the NDA and the Grand Alliance, while other political parties, including Prashant Kishore’s Jan Suraj Party, are also in the fray. Campaigning has begun, and leaders from all political parties have joined the campaign.
The first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections is scheduled for November 6th. In this phase, 1,314 candidates will contest 121 seats. According to information received from the Election Commission, a total of 1,690 candidates filed nomination papers for the 121 constituencies. Of these, 315 nominations were rejected on various grounds, while 61 valid candidates withdrew.
Tejashwi Yadav is contesting again from Raghopur
RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav is contesting from the Raghopur assembly seat. He is facing Satish Kumar Yadav of the BJP and Chanchal Singh of the Jan Suraj Party. The Raghopur seat has been considered a traditional stronghold of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family and the RJD. It is a high-profile seat in the state.
Lalu Prasad Yadav himself won this seat in 1995 and 2000, serving as Chief Minister both times. His wife, Rabri Devi, also represented Raghopur three times: in the 2000 by-election and in two subsequent assembly elections. Their son, Tejashwi Yadav, has been an MLA since 2015.

This time, Tejashwi is contesting from Raghopur again, facing Satish Kumar Yadav of the BJP and Chanchal Singh of the Jan Suraj Party. This contest holds historical significance, as Satish Kumar Yadav had caused a major upset in 2010 by defeating Rabri Devi by 13,06 votes. He received 64,222 votes, while Rabri Devi received 51,216 votes. However, Satish Kumar Yadav lost to Tejashwi in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections.
Tej Pratap Yadav’s fate at stake in Mahua
The main candidates for the Mahua seat are Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Mukesh Kumar Roshan, Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Tej Pratap Yadav of the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD), and Indrajit Pradhan of the Jan Suraj Party (JSP). Lalu Prasad Yadav’s elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, has announced his candidacy for the Mahua seat after being expelled from the RJD leadership, putting the seat in the spotlight.

Tej Pratap first won from Mahua in 2015, but in 2020, he decided to contest from Hasanpur. Currently, this seat is held by Mukesh Kumar Roshan, who is again the RJD candidate and will face Tej Pratap in Mahua.
Further intensifying the contest, the Lok Janshakti Party, led by Chirag Paswan and part of the NDA, has fielded Sanjay Singh against both Tej Pratap and Roshan. With three strong contenders, this election in Mahua will witness a high-profile and intense contest.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary in the fray from Tarapur
Tarapur in Munger district, Bihar, is one of the most crucial constituencies in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. Traditionally a JD(U) stronghold, Tarapur has been allocated to the BJP as part of the seat-sharing arrangement, marking a major shift in the alliance’s strategy. This decision has drawn attention as it brings Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary into the fray. Chaudhary has described Tarapur as his ancestral seat, making this contest both politically and personally significant.

Due to the large presence of Kushwaha, Yadav, Muslim, and Scheduled Caste voters, Tarapur has seen a close contest between the JD(U) and RJD over the years, but the JD(U)’s consistent victories since 2010 have made the party dominant in the region. Now, with the BJP fielding its candidate in this seat, the 2025 elections will determine how well the NDA alliance can hold its ground and withstand the challenge posed by the Grand Alliance. Samrat Chaudhary is pitted against Arun Kumar of the RJD and Santosh Kumar Singh of the Jansuraj Party.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha’s prestige at stake in Lakhisarai
Lakhisarai is one of the most high-profile constituencies in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. This seat is crucial because it is the home turf of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha. For the BJP, this is a prestige battle. A total of 13 candidates are contesting against Sinha, including Congress candidate Amresh Kumar and Jansuraj Party candidate Suraj Kumar.

Vijay Sinha (1)

In the 2020 elections, BJP’s Vijay Kumar Sinha won the Lakhisarai seat by 74,212 votes. He also won the 2015 election, securing 75,901 votes and a 40.8% vote share. The BJP has built a strong base in Lakhisarai over the past decade, and Vijay Kumar Sinha has won the seat three times in a row – in 2010, 2015, and 2020. He previously won the seat in 2005.

How will Maithili Thakur fare in Alinagar?
Alinagar has been in the news recently after folk singer and BJP leader Maithili Thakur announced her candidacy for the seat. She will face RJD’s Vinod Mishra and Jansuraj Party’s Viplav Kumar Chaudhary in the upcoming Bihar elections. For many years, the RJD held a strong hold on this seat and faced no significant challengers. However, in 2020, the VSIP won the seat in a major upset, ending the RJD’s long run.

Since that surprising result, elections in Alinagar have become much more competitive and unpredictable. During the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Mishri Lal Yadav of the VSIP emerged as the winning candidate in the Alinagar seat. Vinod Mishra of the RJD came in second. In 2015, RJD’s Abdul Bari Siddiqui defeated BJP’s Mishri Lal Yadav by a total of 67,461 votes. Yadav, on the other hand, received 54,001 votes.

Harnaut seat: JDU’s credibility at stake
The main candidates from the Harnaut assembly seat are Hari Narayan Singh of the JDU, Arun Kumar of the Congress, and Kamlesh Paswan of the Jan Suraj Party. Harnaut has had a close relationship with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for decades. He first reached the assembly from this seat in 1985, and since then, it has remained a stronghold of his party, the JD(U). Initially, there was speculation that Nitish Kumar might field his son, Nishant Kumar, as the JD(U) candidate from Harnaut. However, this did not materialize. Instead, the JD(U) has fielded Hari Narayan Singh, who will face Arun Kumar of the Congress and Kamlesh Paswan of the JSP. This seat holds profound political significance, representing Nitish Kumar’s legacy and serving as a key battleground in Bihar politics.

Parsa Seat: Tej Pratap’s Cousin-in-Law RJD Candidate
The Parsa assembly seat in Saran district, Bihar, is contested by Karishma Rai of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Chhote Lal Rai of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), and Mosaheb Mahto of the Jan Suraj Party (JSP).

The RJD has made this seat a high-profile one by fielding Tej Pratap Yadav’s cousin, Dr. Karishma Rai. Following a family dispute, Tej Pratap Yadav is contesting the election as a separate party.

All eyes will be on the Hasanpur seat
The Hasanpur seat in Bihar, once represented by former RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav, has been a key issue for both the JD(U) and RJD in the recent assembly elections. It is located in the Rosera subdivision of Samastipur district. Before Tej Pratap’s victory, the seat was held by JD(U) leader Raj Kumar Rai for two consecutive terms. This time, RJD has fielded Mala Pushpam from this seat, and Raj Kumar Ray will once again contest on a JD(U) ticket.

Voting will be held on 121 seats in the first phase on November 6.
