BIMSTEC Summit 2025: During the BIMSTEC Summit 2025, a very special sight was seen in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, were seen sitting next to each other. The occasion was dinner, which was hosted by Thailand’s Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra. The possibility of this meeting was already being expressed. It is considered very important in view of the changing relations between India and Bangladesh.

The meeting of Prime Minister Modi and Mohammad Yunus is considered important because this will be the first high-level talks after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster from power. Tensions have increased recently in relations between India and Bangladesh for the past several months, behind which there are many reasons. For example, attacks have been carried out on minorities in the neighboring country, in which Hindus have been the main target. After Bangladesh’s relations with India deteriorated, its relations with Pakistan and China have become cordial. However, amid all this, there is a possibility of discussion on these issues from this meeting during the BIMSTEC Summit 2025. India can take advantage of this and clarify the strategic concerns to Bangladesh.

Yunus’s visit to China and India’s concern

Mohammad Yunus’s recent visit to China was a matter of concern for India. He made some comments about India’s Northeast region, which India did not like. The main reason for this is that China is constantly strengthening its hold in South Asia, and India is worried that Bangladesh may completely come under the influence of Beijing.

Signs of growing China-Bangladesh partnership
China has expressed its intention to invest in Bangladesh’s infrastructure. There is also a possibility of Bangladesh’s military cooperation with China. It is feared that for this, Bangladesh will not hesitate to make a possible change in its foreign policy. Therefore, the Modi-Yunus meeting during the BIMSTEC summit can be an opportunity for India to establish a balance.

Growing closeness with Pakistan

Military and diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have recently increased. Bangladesh conducted joint military exercises with Pakistan. Military delegations from Pakistan and Bangladesh were also seen visiting. Amidst all this, Yunus has also received an invitation from Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to visit Pakistan. This is a warning bell for India because Bangladesh has so far maintained strong strategic relations with India. If this attitude changes, new geopolitical instability can arise in South Asia.

Possible results from the Modi-Yunus meeting

The meeting between Modi and Yunus can go in several possible directions, which are as follows.

Modi can emphasize the importance of continuing cooperation with Bangladesh.

There can be an attempt to balance the influence of China and Pakistan.

India can offer new economic proposals or defense cooperation.

Attention on the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.

India-Bangladesh have a strong economic partnership, and this meeting can help resolve trade disputes.

India can demand a clear stand from Yunus on many important issues.
