Rio de Janeiro: A massive fire broke out in a small hotel in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre early Friday morning. At least 10 people died and 11 others were injured in this accident. A fire broke out in the three-storey building of ‘Garoa Floresta’ hotel in the early hours of the morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring 11 others, officials said. The hotel provided affordable single-room accommodation and had a contract with the municipality to shelter the homeless. According to the fire department of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the hotel did not have the required license and did not have an adequate emergency firefighting plan.

56-year-old Marcelo Wagner Shelek, who survived the incident, told daily newspaper ‘Zero Hora’ that he escaped by running out of the hotel in time, but his sister, who was living on the third floor, died in the fire. Went. The ‘Garoa Floresta’ hotel is part of the Garroa Group, which has 22 other small hotels in Porto Alegre. Another of its hotels caught fire in 2022, killing one person and injuring 11 others.

The hotel had 400 rooms
Porto Alegre Mayor Sebastião Mello said at a news conference that his administration had signed an agreement with the company in 2020 to use 400 of its rooms to shelter homeless people. Mello said the contract will now be reviewed and the hotel’s 22 units will be inspected. The hotel where the fire broke out on Friday, near Porto Alegre City Hall, had a contract for 16 rooms. Local officials said eight of the 11 people rescued from the fire were still hospitalized, two of whom were in serious condition but with no life-threatening injuries.
