Shantanu Thakur on CAA: Union Minister Shantanu Thakur has made a big claim regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He has said that CAA will be implemented in the country within a week. Shantanu Thakur said in a program in Kakdwip of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal that, I am guaranteeing from the stage that in the next 7 days this law will be implemented not only in Bengal but in the entire country.
Regarding this law, he also mentioned the speech of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in December last year in which Amit Shah had described the Citizenship Amendment Act as the ‘law of the country’ and said that no one can stop its implementation. Then West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also accused of misleading people regarding CAA.
What is CAA law
The Narendra Modi government at the Center had brought this law. Under this law, persecuted non-Muslims (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians) who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan till 31 December 2014 will be given Indian citizenship. This law was passed by the Parliament in December 2019. After being passed by the Parliament, it was sent to the President for approval. After this, a series of protests started in different states of the country. There was a protest demonstration regarding this issue in Delhi also for several months.
Bengal had passed a resolution against CAA
The West Bengal government led by TMC’s Mamata Banerjee had passed a resolution against the CAA in 2020. West Bengal became the fourth state to bring such a proposal. Then Mamata Banerjee had announced, “We will not allow CAA, NPR and NRC to be implemented in Bengal.
