Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from her post on Monday in a surprising move after disagreeing with Justin Trudeau over US President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats. Freeland was the Deputy PM as well as Canada’s Finance Minister, she also resigned as Finance Minister. The resignation of the Deputy PM marked the first open disagreement against Prime Minister Trudeau within his cabinet. This political stir in Canada has put Trudeau’s chair in danger.
Trudeau appoints LeBlanc as new Finance Minister
Soon after Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation, her cabinet colleague Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as Canada’s new Finance Minister. LeBlanc, a longtime aide of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, served as Public Safety Minister in his cabinet. The move comes at a time when Canada is grappling with a $62 billion deficit due to “unexpected expenses”.
Freeland said after resignation
Freeland pointed to Trump’s plan of 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports in her resignation letter, saying, “Our country is facing a serious challenge today. In her resignation letter, Freeland said that Trudeau wanted to transfer her to another job, to which she replied: “I have concluded that the only honest and viable path for me is to resign from the cabinet.”
Second blow to Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had not yet recovered from the shock of Chrystia Freeland’s resignation when pro-Khalistan and New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has given him another big blow. Along with this, 23 MPs have written a letter demanding Trudeau’s resignation. Jagmeet Singh has made a big statement about Trudeau and said that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should resign after Chrystia Freeland stepped down from the post of Finance Minister this morning.
Demand for Trudeau’s resignation being made
Canadian media reports on Trudeau’s resignation has been demanded which states that the Prime Minister is actually considering resignation. Regarding this, Canada’s CTV reported, “Sources told CTV News that the Prime Minister has told the cabinet that he is considering resignation and he is possibly planning to address the Parliament. The TV quoted Trudeau as saying that for the last several weeks, you and I have been at odds over the best way forward for Canada.”
7 reasons due to which he is surrounded in his own party
The problems of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who gives statements against India every day, are increasing day by day. Criticism against him is increasing in Canada, due to which his political position is getting weakened. Trudeau was thinking that by supporting Khalistan and going against India, he can once again come to power. But his dream seems to be going down the drain.
7 reasons are being understood as the danger to Trudeau’s chair. Elections are to be held in Canada next year and this time is challenging for Trudeau. His popularity is decreasing, he is being opposed in his own party. Donald Trump has created more problems for the people of Canada, who are already struggling with inflation and unemployment, by increasing tariffs.
Lack of popularity and love for Khalistan
The biggest reason for weakening in Canadian politics is the decreasing popularity of Justin Trudeau. Trudeau has been at the center of controversies in Canada for the last few years, many of his administrative decisions have had a bad effect on the public. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Canada’s economy and social policy are going through a bad phase, which has become the reason for negative reaction among the public.
On the other hand, his support to Khalistan supporters has also become a reason for his criticism. India has already been protesting Trudeau’s support to Khalistanis. Now the protest against the Khalistan movement has increased in Canada and Trudeau is being opposed for his stance. Opposition parties and some MPs are alleging that the Prime Minister has failed to resolve this issue.
Elections next year and Trudeau surrounded within the party
Elections are to be held in Canada next year and Justin Trudeau is facing opposition within his party. Some members of his party want that Trudeau should not be made the Prime Ministerial candidate in the elections next year. Because the people of Canada seem to like the opposition leader Pierre Poilievre more than him. Apart from this, some MPs have demanded Trudeau’s resignation.
Trump also increased the trouble
Donald Trump has started tightening the screws on Canadian and Chinese companies after winning the US elections. Donald Trump has proposed imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian imports, which would make it difficult for Canadian companies to compete in the US market.
