Central government announced the abolition of FMR i.e. Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar, people of hilly areas are preparing to protest, what is the reason?

On February 8, the Central Government had announced the abolition of FMR i.e. Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar. According to this, the borders of Myanmar with four states of India will be sealed. After this decision, some people are coming in support of the government. Some people do not seem happy with this decision. Now the CMs of Mizoram and Nagaland have also joined these people, both are not happy with this decision of the government. Some people believe that doing this will keep the borders safe while some believe that the government should prepare a formula before doing this.

After this decision of the government, people seem to be divided into two groups. On one side there are people from hilly areas and on the other side there are people from valley areas. The people of the valley have no problem with this decision of the government. But the people of the hilly areas are finding this decision of the government distasteful. Meanwhile, many organizations of the valley including Meitai community organization Kokomi believe that this rule will put a brake on the activities of wrong elements, which will keep the borders of these states safe.

At the same time, Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Duhoma said that people from both sides of the border, Mizo-Zo-Chin community, cannot be stopped from moving into the area. Also, none of them accept the borders created unilaterally during the British rule. So it does not seem possible to accept this decision. Also, Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio has said that Naga people live on both sides of the border. Therefore, the government should make a proper formula before acting on this decision.

What did the student organization say?
On this decision of the government, Naga Students Organization (NSF) has warned that Naga people on both sides of the border of Myanmar and India have the birth right to live here like every free citizen. What’s more, this decision may cause serious problems in the future. This organization has asked the UN to intervene on this decision given by the government and further told that many organizations of Mizoram are preparing to organize a big movement against this decision.

During this time, people of the areas bordering Manipur say that sealing the border will cause practical problems. Because he has relations with people from the other side for centuries, including his relatives. He says that people from both sides support each other in every happiness.

What is FMR?
There is a 1600 km long border between India and Myanmar. There was a free agreement between the two countries in the year 1970. The free agreement is called FMR, according to which people of both the countries are allowed to visit each other’s border areas without any paperwork. It was last renewed in the year 2016.
