Chennai Airport :-Customs officials at the Chennai airport busted two separate major smuggling incidents involving smuggling of gold and cocaine. These cases have highlighted the dangerous network of international smuggling and the vigilance of the Customs Department in curbing it.
1.7 kg gold recovered from Air India cabin crew and passenger
In the first incident, a cabin crew member and a passenger coming from Dubai to Chennai by Air India flight were caught by custom officials while smuggling gold. During investigation, it was found that the cabin crew member had tried to smuggle 1.7 kg of 24 carat gold by hiding it in his undergarments.
The plan failed due to the vigilance of the customs officials. Both the persons involved in the smuggling were immediately arrested and sent to judicial custody. This incident has raised serious questions on the methods of security and monitoring of employees within Air India and other airlines. Air India’s response is still awaited.
Kenyan woman arrested with 1.4 kg cocaine
In another incident, customs officials arrested a Kenyan woman smuggling cocaine. The woman had come to Chennai from Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Airlines flight. During the search, she swallowed 90 capsules and hid them inside her body.
These capsules were removed by the customs officials with medical assistance. 1.4 kg cocaine was recovered from them. The value of the seized cocaine in the international market has been estimated to be around Rs 14.2 crore. The operation was successful on the basis of accurate intelligence and the woman has been arrested under the NDPS Act 1985 and sent to judicial custody.
Customs Department’s vigilance against smuggling
Both these incidents underline the appreciation of Customs Department’s vigilance and security efforts at Chennai Airport. Whether it is smuggling of gold with the help of airline staff or smuggling of drugs by international passengers, Customs officials performed their duties to the fullest.
The gold smuggling case reflects the risks that can exist within the airline industry. At the same time, the disclosure of drug smuggling is proof of how unique and dangerous methods are adopted for drug smuggling.
Customs Department’s role in national security
These incidents have highlighted the need to increase vigilance against the growing threats of smuggling. This strict action against gold and drug smuggling is a proof of the tireless efforts and efficiency of Customs officials.
As the investigation of these cases progresses, it will be interesting to see how much the Customs Department is able to reach the roots of these smuggling networks. The outcome of both the cases can set an important precedent for national security and anti-smuggling operations in the days to come.
