Chhattisgarh: In the last 6 and a half years, a total of 177 security personnel including paramilitary personnel committed suicide, why are suicide figures being released

The state government told the Chhattisgarh Assembly on Wednesday that a total of 177 security personnel, including paramilitary personnel, have committed suicide in the last 6 and a half years. This shocking information was given by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma in a written reply to a question by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ajay Chandrakar. Vijay Sharma also handles the Home Department.

According to the answer given by the Deputy Chief Minister, 177 security personnel committed suicide in the state between 2019 and June 15, 2025. These include personnel from both central forces and state police. According to the data, 26 security personnel were from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), five from the Border Security Force (BSF), three from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and one each from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Tripura Rifles. The remaining security personnel belonged to various branches of the state police including Chhattisgarh Armed Force, Special Task Force and Home Guard. It is noteworthy that CRPF, BSF and ITBP personnel have been deployed on a large scale in the Naxal-affected areas of the state.

Year-wise figures of suicides
2019: 25 security personnel
2020: 38 security personnel
2021: 24 security personnel
2022: 31 security personnel
2023: 22 security personnel
2024: 29 security personnel
2025 (till June 15): 8 security personnel

18 security personnel were also involved in murder incidents
The reply also stated that during the last six and a half years, 18 security personnel, including paramilitary personnel, have been involved in murder incidents. These incidents also include some cases of mutual dispute, in which the soldiers opened fire on their own colleagues.

Reasons for suicide and murder?
Deputy Chief Minister Sharma said in a written reply that after such an incident, an investigation has been conducted in each case. During the investigation, statements of departmental officers/employees, family members of the deceased and other witnesses are taken for review and further action is taken. The investigation has found that officers/employees mainly commit suicide or murder due to family, personal, alcohol consumption and health related reasons and sudden anger.

He also informed in his reply that all Superintendents of Police and military officers are running many welfare activities to make their subordinate police officers/employees mentally strong.
