The controversial remarks of Trinamool Congress leaders in the case of rape of a student in Calcutta Law College, Kasba, West Bengal, have created a ruckus in the state. First MP Kalyan Banerjee and later MLA and former minister Madan Mitra had made controversial remarks. Mamata Banerjee expressed her displeasure over the controversial remarks of the party leaders and on the instructions of Mamata Banerjee, state Trinamool Congress President Subrata Bakshi issued a show cause notice to Madan Mitra. At the same time, Kalyan Banerjee changed his tune and said that the accused will definitely be hanged according to the law. If not, he should be hanged from a lamppost and shot.
The remarks of Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee on the Kasba gang rape case have changed 180 degrees from his previous remarks. In Srirampur, Kalyan Banerjee said, “Anyone who can rape his colleague like this should be hanged. There is no place other than the gallows.”
However, Kalyan Banerjee had said a day earlier, “Security is everything but tell me what will the security personnel do if a friend rapes his girlfriend! Will there be police inside the college?” A heated debate had started on his comments. The party had issued a statement saying that it does not support this comment in any way.
The culprit should be tied to a lamppost and shot…Kalyan Banerjee
Raising his voice against the leadership, he said, “Some irresponsible people are sitting as leaders. This is the reason why women are being tortured like this and the leaders sitting at the top are not aware of anything. These two boys are defaming us. If there is a law, they should be hanged. If there is no law, they should be tied to a lamppost and shot.”
On the other hand, the party has taken strict action against former minister Madan Mitra for his controversial comments on the Kasba gang rape incident. On Sunday, the party’s state president Subrata Bakshi sent a show cause letter to Madan. He has been asked to respond within three days. The letter states that Madan’s comments on the Kasba incident have damaged the public image of the party. Therefore, a show cause notice has been issued to him.
A student has been accused of raping a girl student in the South Calcutta Law College campus in the town, which has created a stir in the state politics. The three people against whom the victim has lodged a complaint are members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). After this incident, Trinamool Congress held a press conference and announced that the culprits would be punished severely, but Madan Mitra had made controversial remarks on Saturday.
Show cause notice to Madan Mitra
He said that the girl student should not have gone to college alone. The MLA questioned why she went alone? Trinamool issued a statement the same night and opposed this comment. It was said that Madan Mitra’s comments were ‘personal’. The party does not support it.
The show cause letter sent to Madan Mitra on Sunday said, “A very heinous and sad incident has taken place against a law student in the Kasba area of Kolkata. The top leadership of the party has expressed special regret over this extremely sensitive and sad incident of brutal atrocity. This incident has been strongly condemned. The administration is taking necessary steps.” The notice said, “The culprits were promptly identified and arrested. Your unwanted, unnecessary and insensitive comments on this matter have caused serious damage to the image of our party. Also, your comments contradict the strict stand of the party. You are ordered to explain within the next three days for this behavior which violates party discipline.”
