New Delhi: After the United Nations, India has also expressed deep sorrow over the death of a retired colonel of the Indian Army, who was engaged in humanitarian aid in Gaza as a UN worker during the Israel-Hamas war. India on Wednesday said it is deeply saddened by the death of Colonel (retd) Vaibhav Anil Kale, an Indian citizen who worked with the United Nations in Gaza. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as well as its embassies in Tel Aviv and Ramallah are providing all possible assistance in bringing back Kale’s mortal remains to India.
Kale was killed in an attack on his vehicle in the Rafah area of Gaza last Monday. The Ministry of External Affairs said, “We are deeply saddened by the death of Colonel Vaibhav Anil Kale (Retd), Security Coordination Officer in the United Nations Department of Defense (DSS) in Gaza on May 13.” It also said, “We express our condolences to his family.” And express our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones.” The Ministry of External Affairs says, ”Our Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and our embassies in Tel Aviv and Ramallah are providing all assistance in repatriating the mortal remains to India and the incident. We are in touch with the concerned authorities regarding the investigation.
Colonel Vaibhav was the victim of Israeli attack
Let us inform you that Colonel Vaibhav Anil Kale (46) took premature retirement from the Indian Army in 2022 and was appointed Security Coordination Officer in the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) two months ago. On Monday morning, he was traveling in a UN vehicle with other UNDSS staff to the ‘European Hospital’ in Rafah when he was hit by an attack in which he died and another Jordanian DSS staff was injured. It is understood that the vehicle was attacked by an Israeli tank. Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said, “We express our regret and condolences to the government and people of India.” “We appreciate the contribution that India has made,” he said. Haq said the United Nations has formed a team to investigate the deadly attack.
