Congo: M23 rebels declared a unilateral ceasefire amid conflict in Goma city, 900 people have died in the fighting so far, advisory issued for Indian citizens

Cango: Amid the ongoing conflict in the Congolese city of Goma and surrounding areas, M23 rebels on Monday announced a unilateral ceasefire on humanitarian grounds. The move came after the United Nations reported that at least 900 people have been killed in the conflict so far.

The United Nations Health Agency (WHO) reported that more than 900 people were killed in a fight between the Congolese government army and Rwandan-backed rebels in the eastern city of Goma in Congo last week. Earlier the death toll was reported to be 773, but after five days of fierce fighting, 900 bodies were recovered from the streets of Goma by Friday. About 2,900 people have been injured in this conflict.

Advisory for Indian citizens

In view of the ongoing conflict in Congo, the Indian Embassy in Kinshasa on Sunday issued an advisory for Indian citizens living there. The embassy has advised all Indian citizens living in the Bukavu region to immediately move to safer places. The embassy has issued three separate advisories advising Indians to keep an emergency plan ready.

Advice to Indian citizens
The advisory said that the M23 rebels are 20-25 kilometers away from Bukavu, so all Indian citizens have been advised to move to safer places as soon as possible. Along with this, it has also been advised to postpone the trip to Bukavu.

Fight to remove the President
The main objective of the rebels in Congo was to remove President Felix Tshisekedi and his government. The infamous M23 rebel group was included in this group of rebels. During this time, dozens of soldiers surrendered in the city of Goma. Many parts of the city echoed with the sound of firing and explosions.
