The phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the occasion of Diwali has now taken a political turn. While both leaders confirmed the conversation, Congress leader and party general secretary Jairam Ramesh has reacted sharply. Modi posted on Twitter (formerly Twitter) that President Trump called him to wish him a happy Diwali and that the two had a positive conversation. However, Jairam Ramesh alleged that the conversation was not limited to greetings but also discussed sensitive issues such as India’s oil imports from Russia, which the Prime Minister did not make public.
In his post, Jairam Ramesh wrote that the Prime Minister has finally publicly acknowledged that President Trump called him and the two spoke. However, the Prime Minister has only said that the US President wished him a happy Diwali. While Modi hides this, Trump is exposing it. He alleged that the US President has issued a statement on his own, stating that India has assured to stop oil imports from Russia. This is the fourth time in the last six days that President Trump has announced his policy towards India.
The PM has finally publicly acknowledged that President Trump called him up and that the two spoke to each other. But all that the PM has said is that the US President extended Diwali greetings.
But while Mr. Modi conceals, Mr. Trump reveals.

Trump’s statement and questions about Russian oil imports
During a recent conversation with reporters in Washington, Trump stated that he had discussed issues such as trade and the purchase of crude oil from Russia with PM Modi. Trump stated that he was confident that India would now reduce or stop oil imports from Russia to respect US sanctions policy. Meanwhile, PM Modi simply said in his post, “Thank you for President Trump’s call and Diwali greetings.”
