Cuttack Violence: A tense situation prevailed in Cuttack city on Sunday following clashes during the Durga idol immersion procession. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik appealed to citizens to maintain communal harmony. This appeal came after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) defied the district administration’s orders and organized a motorcycle rally in the evening.

- The rally started from Vidyadharpur on the eastern outskirts of the city and passed through Dargah Bazaar and other major areas. CCTV cameras along the route were damaged and shops in the Gaurishankar Park area were set on fire.
- To maintain law and order, the state government suspended internet services in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Cuttack Development Authority (CDA), and the surrounding 42 mouza areas from 7 pm on Sunday to 7 pm on Monday.
- CM Mohan Charan Majhi said that strict action will be taken against violators. He said that Cuttack is a thousand-year-old city known for brotherhood and unity.
- Naveen Patnaik said that Odisha has a reputation as a peace-loving state and maintaining law and order is essential.
- Sophia Firdous, Congress MLA from Barabati, Cuttack, expressed her sadness and concern over the incident. She said that those who disrupt the unity of Durga Puja, which has been celebrated for more than 500 years, should be punished according to the law.
- The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a 12-hour shutdown in the city on October 6 to protest the clashes.
- The clashes occurred near Hathi Pokhari in the Dargah Bazaar area between 1:30 and 2 am on Saturday night. The mob threw stones and glass bottles from rooftops, injuring several people, including DCP Khiladi Rishikesh Gyandev.
- Six individuals were arrested for their involvement in the violence.
- Following the incident, police presence was increased in Cuttack and internet services were blocked to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation.
- According to officials, the violence erupted when some locals objected to loud music being played during the immersion procession. The argument gradually escalated into a confrontation.
