Cyclone Montha: After hitting the Andhra coast, Cyclone ‘Montha’ is moving towards Odisha-Bengal, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to several districts in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal; 52 flights and 120 trains cancelled.

Cyclone Montha: The severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’, which originated in the Bay of Bengal, has hit the coast between Kakinada and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, causing significant damage to hundreds of houses and trees in the coastal areas. Air and rail services have been severely disrupted. Meanwhile, the cyclone is now moving steadily north and northwest. Several districts in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and West Bengal are experiencing heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Andhra Pradesh is bearing the brunt of the storm. At the time of the cyclone’s landfall, its wind speed was 100 to 110 kilometers per hour. Therefore, residents have been advised to remain indoors. State governments are on alert.

Heavy Rain Warning in These Bengal Districts
Montha is also threatening West Bengal. Several districts, including 24 Parganas, Medinipur, and Birbhum, are experiencing heavy rainfall and landslides in hilly areas. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts until October 31st.

Schools and Anganwadis in 9 Odisha Districts Closed Until October 30th
Odisha has deployed 140 rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and ODRAF, along with over 5,000 personnel. Schools and Anganwadis will remain closed in 9 districts until October 30th. Government employees’ leave has been cancelled.

Red Alert in Several Odisha Districts
The effects of Cyclone Montha are also being felt in Odisha. Due to increased sea turbulence, movement of people to the Gopalpur port in Odisha has been halted. People have been asked to remain indoors, and a red alert has been issued in several districts due to the storm. Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Raigarh, Ganjapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are fully prepared to deal with the storm.

52 flights and a total of 120 trains of the South Central Railway Zone cancelled
To mitigate the impact of the cyclone, the Andhra Pradesh government has set up 3,174 shelter homes in 22 districts. Meanwhile, 52 flights from Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati airports in Andhra Pradesh have been cancelled. A total of 120 trains of the South Central Railway Zone have been cancelled. The NDRF has deployed 25 teams, and 20 teams have been placed on alert.

CM Chandrababu Naidu remained in the Secretariat overnight
In view of the situation, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu remained in the Secretariat overnight. He appealed for increased vigilance in view of the cyclone that crossed the coast at midnight.
