Cyclone ‘Montha’ made landfall in coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Cyclone Montha wreaked havoc, landfall lasted for 5.30 hours, 2 dead, trees uprooted in coastal areas and power supply disrupted.

Cyclone Montha made landfall on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Its epicenter was between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam. Initially, the storm’s wind speed reached 100 to 110 kilometers per hour, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply in many coastal areas.

How long did the landfall last?
The landfall process continued from 7:30 pm to around 1 am, or approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes. Although Montha’s speed slowed somewhat after hitting the coast, its effects are being felt in many parts of the country. Alerts for heavy rain and strong winds have been issued in several states. The Meteorological Department has urged people to exercise caution and avoid going near the beaches.

Cyclone Montha kills two people in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu stated that two people have died in the state due to the severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’. He said that precautionary measures helped minimize the damage. The Chief Minister called on the entire government machinery to continue its efforts for the next two days to provide maximum relief to the cyclone-affected people.

Instructions to restore normalcy as soon as possible
Naidu said in a statement, “If we continue working in this manner for the next two days, we can provide a lot of relief to the people. Two people have died due to the cyclone.” The Chief Minister directed officials to restore normalcy as soon as possible and asked ministers and officials to visit the affected areas and inquire with the people if they are facing any problems. He directed officials to assess the damage caused by the cyclone so that it can be submitted to the central government.

Impact felt in Telangana as well, with heavy rains in several districts
The impact of Cyclone Montha was also felt in Telangana. Torrential rains lashed various districts here. The storm passed off the coast of neighboring Andhra Pradesh last night. Heavy rains were recorded in several districts of Telangana, including Warangal, Mahabubabad, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Jangaon, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool, and Siddipet. Heavy rains also lashed Hyderabad. State Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held a meeting with senior officials to review the impact of Cyclone Montha.

Red alert issued in the state
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Redalwada in Warangal district recorded 183.3 mm of rain between 8:30 am and 2:00 pm, and Kalleda 159 mm of rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanumakonda districts from 1:00 pm on Wednesday to 8:30 am on October 30. The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and strong winds of up to 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, is expected at some places in these districts.

Heavy Rains Expected in Several Districts of West Bengal
Cyclone ‘Montha’ is expected to bring heavy rainfall to several districts of West Bengal until Friday. The IMD said that as the cyclone moves north-northwestward and weakens into a depression, light to moderate rain is likely in parts of South Bengal. The weather office said that heavy rain (7 to 11 cm) is very likely in parts of South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, and Jhargram on Wednesday, and in Birbhum, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, and Purulia districts by Friday. The department said that heavy to very heavy rain (7 to 20 cm) is very likely in parts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts of North Bengal on Friday.

How was the impact of Montha in Odisha?
Light to moderate rain was recorded in the coastal region of Odisha, accompanied by winds of 30 to 40 kmph. These areas include districts like Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur. The highest rainfall of 105 mm was recorded in Mayurbhanj district, followed by Balasore (93.5 mm), Khurda (90 mm), and Chandbali (74.4 mm).

Following the landfall, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Center withdrew its ‘Red’ and ‘Orange’ alerts for the southern Odisha region and issued a new weather forecast. Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Center, said, “We have issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Ganjam, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur districts.”

Several trains cancelled due to Cyclone ‘Montha’
Several trains have been cancelled on October 29 and 30 due to Cyclone Montha. Trains cancelled on October 30 include the Kirandul-Visakhapatnam Passenger (58502), Koraput-Visakhapatnam Passenger (5837), Shalimar-Cherlapalli East Coast Express (18045), and Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express (12703). The Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Duronto (22204) train was also cancelled on October 29. The Railways has requested passengers to check train status before traveling.

Air services also affected, two flights cancelled
Two flights from Visakhapatnam Airport on the morning of October 29 were cancelled due to the cyclone. This included Air India Express flight IX 2885/2745 (Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad), which was diverted due to strong tail winds. It was cancelled due to strong tail winds exceeding flight limits. Indigo flight 6E 7128/29 (Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada) was also cancelled due to inclement weather.

Montha’s impact will be felt in Uttar Pradesh
The impact of Cyclone Montha is expected to be felt in Uttar Pradesh for the next two days. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain in the Varanasi and Mirzapur divisions, as well as in Purvanchal, on October 30 and 31. It has also issued an alert for thunderstorms and winds of up to 30 to 40 kmph in 31 districts of the state.
