Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Delhi on Tuesday evening. Atishi will now be the new Chief Minister of Delhi. After being elected as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party’s legislative party, Atishi met Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and staked claim to form the government. Along with the coronation of the Chief Minister, Atishi will have to form the cabinet in a new way. In such a situation, now everyone’s eyes are on whether Atishi will repeat the old leaders and work with Kejriwal’s team or will she give a chance to new faces in the cabinet?
There are about five months left for the Delhi Assembly elections. Arvind Kejriwal’s intention is to conduct elections in Delhi along with Maharashtra, which he has already mentioned. In such a situation, if the Election Commission agrees, then the elections of Delhi can be announced at any time. Keeping all these facts in mind, Atishi has to form her new cabinet. After Atishi becomes the Chief Minister, two new faces will have to be included in the cabinet. In such a situation, she can try to balance regional and caste equations by giving new faces a chance in the vacant posts of the new cabinet.
Old ministers or new faces?
If Atishi keeps new faces in the cabinet, they will hardly get three months to work. In such a situation, one and a half months will be spent in knowing and understanding their departments, then when will they work. The ruling party will not want to take any kind of risky step just before the elections. At the same time, the old ministers are aware of the work of their departments. This is the reason why Atishi should run the government with the help of old faces. In such a situation, the ministers included in the Kejriwal cabinet can be given a chance again.
Will she express confidence in Kejriwal’s team?
Apart from the Chief Minister, a maximum of 6 ministers can be made on the basis of Delhi Assembly members. Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Imran Hussain, Atishi and Anand Kumar were part of the Kejriwal cabinet. Anand Kumar has left the party and Atishi is now going to become the Chief Minister. In this way, two places have become vacant in the cabinet and there are four old ministers. In such a situation, if Atishi expresses confidence in the Kejriwal team, then all four old faces can get a chance.
These ministers can get a place
If changes are made in the current cabinet, then Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain and Saurabh Bhardwaj can get a place in the cabinet. Apart from this, other MLAs can also be made ministers. If one of these two seats is a general seat, then a Scheduled Caste face can be made a minister. Faces like Somnath Bharti, Durgesh Pathak, Sanjeev Jha, Dilip Pandey and Mahendra Goyal are in the race to become a minister on this general seat.
Dalit face will get a place
Rajkumar Anand, who was included as a Dalit face in the Kejriwal cabinet, resigned from the primary membership and ministerial post of Aam Aadmi Party in April this year. He was made a minister in place of Rajendra Pal Gautam. Gautam resigned from the post of minister in October 2022 after a controversy arose due to his remarks on Hindu deities. Rajkumar Anand and Rajendra Pal Gautam were both Dalit faces. In such a situation, the party will try to give a Dalit face a place in the cabinet. Currently, Kuldeep Kumar, Rakhi Birla, Vishesh Ravi and Girish Soni are Dalit faces in the party. Any one of them can be made a minister.
Challenge of appeasing Purvanchal voters
By deciding to make Atishi the Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal has definitely played a gamble to appease the Punjabi community, but there is definitely a challenge to appease Purvanchal and Dalit votes. It is certain that a Dalit will get a chance in place of Rajkumar Anand, but for Purvanchal votes, a new face can be given a chance. Durgesh Pathak comes from Gorakhpur, while Dilip Pandey is from Ghazipur. Dilip Pandey holds the post of Chief Whip of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi Assembly. In such a situation, there is a large number of voters in Delhi from UP and Bihar, especially Purvanchal. To appease them, it remains to be seen whom Atishi gives a chance in her cabinet.
